Matt is a native of Athens, ME where he was a multiple time state champion and record holder as well as his class valedictorian. Matt graduated from Purdue University in 2016 where he was an exercise major. As a freshman at Purdue Matt was named the Big 10 Cross Country Freshman of the Year after his 8th place showing at the conference meet and went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships that fall. The winter of his freshman year Matt finished 3rd at the US Junior Cross Country Championships to qualify for the U20 World Cross Country Championships where he was the top American finisher in 20th place. Later that spring Matt won the 10,000m at the US Junior Track and Field Championships which qualified him for the Pan-American Junior Championships where he won the Pan-Am Junior title. His sophomore year in cross country Matt became the first Boilermaker since 1987 to earn All-American honors with his 37th place finish. As a junior in cross country he improved upon that finish with a career best 19th place at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to earn his 2nd All-American honor. On the outdoor track that spring Matt won his first Big 10 Conference Championships in the 5,000m after a runner-up finish in the 10,000m earlier in the meet. He went on to the NCAA Championships where he finished with All-American honors in 7th place. In the fall of his senior year Matt was the Big 10 Conference Champion in cross country setting a new meet record over the 8k course of 23:12.
